New Boat

Hello all, My wife and I recently picked up a '66 DS 1 Sail #2459. I have been looking for a boat for a while and this one actually found us. After this season is over and a complete overhaul she will be Christened Providence. In between sails we are working on "small" projects that will freshen the boat but not keep us out of the water. To my great surprise my wife has taken strongly to learning to sail and get the boat in tip top shape. So far we have only been in the local lake (Monroe, NY) but my wife it itching to get to bigger bodies of water and longer days under sail. Eventually I would like to find a local fleet or club to sail at, if anyone knows of DaySailers in the Southern New York, Northern Jersey, Long Island area please let me know. Below is a list of what is currently planned and what will be done in the off season. Very grateful for this forum, lots of good info and some entertainment to boot
Current work:
*Clean, clean, clean the boat stem to stern - Check
*Clean, clean, clean the mast and boom - Check (well sort of, the skipper says I can do better)
*Strip, sand, sand, sand and sand the floorboards and comings refinish with Becket Poly - In progress thanks to my wonderful wife who has taken this on single handedly
*Sand and paint the interior floor - Check (Bilgekote and blue splat to cut down the glare)
*Replace all green molded, rotted running rigging - In progress, blocks and cleats are in decent shape will not be replaced until the off season. Thankfully the sails are in decent shape and don't need to be replaced immediately.
*Make new transport mast stand and boom crutch - In progress
*Clean and paint trailer - in progress
*Get in and take a look under the seats for the dreaded soggy foam flotation

Off Season
*Sand and repaint the hull and top sides.
*Replace / repair what ever we break, ding or damage this season
I am sure there is more to do but I cant think if what at the moment.

Thanks for sticking it out and finishing this long post. We are very excited about the restoration and the sailing. Any and all advice is welcome. Once I get the pic's compressed I will post the progress.

I think the nearest fleet to you is in Clinton, NJ. There is also one listed in Cheshire CT. If you click on the "Day Sailer Association" tab at the top, there is a listing of the fleets. There are plenty of single DSers scattered around the Tri-state area too. If you see any around start talking to them, and perhaps you can start a fleet. That is what happened with ours. I grew up on LI, but now live in Ohio, so I can't help you a whole lot. If you run into any problems this is a great resource. Don't be shy.

You can be certain the old foam in the flotations tanks has become waterlogged. You will find many that have tackled this job and the advice for opening the chambers and replacing the old foam.

Thanks all for the replies. I (hopefully we) definitely have the fever. Looking forward to many journeys. I tried to post pics to the gallery here but I was never able to compress them enough so for now some photos reside on Flickr.

For Windows there's a free application: Resize my Photos. If you pick 800x600 size and medium quality compression, the pictures usually work here. Potrait style pictures, I think, are limited to 600 pixels tall as well, I believe, which is kind of weird, but most boat pix are landscape anyway.
